A powerful headlamp with 1,650 lumens and constant current regulation. Specially designed for MTB use, orienteering, rogaining and multisport competition. Light and small but still very bright with long runtimes.
A high-powered headlamp made in the Czech Republic
The Lucifer M5+ headlamp is waterproof, powerful and lightweight with an output of 1650 lumens. It’s ideal for runners, mountain bikers, orienteering, mushers, climbers and cavers, as well as travellers and adventurers needing a strong and reliable light. One of the smallest high-powered lights available.
We set out to make the Lucifer M5+ as efficient as possible. It uses the latest generation of Cree XP-L2 LEDs and Samsung INR18650-35E li-ion cells, each providing the highest capacity on the market. The M5 provides constant regulated light output with discharge and state-of-charge indication, temperature protection and a well designed user interface with 5 modes.
As well as the headband mount, the M5+’s accessories include handlebar and helmet mounts ensuring that it can be configured and used in a variety of ways. The light can be mounted on a bike in couple of seconds.
Lightweight CNC milled body
The body of the headlamp is CNC machined from aerospace aluminium alloy and anodized with a 25um protection layer. The headlamp body has many cooling fins and sheds heat well. It is as light and small as possible. It’s reduced depth makes it very stable on the head and it comes in 3 colours - black, red and blue.
Li-ion batteries with the highest capacity
The M5’s battery has a sealed, waterproof hard case with 2 li-ion Samsung INR18650-35E cells.
For their size and weight these have the best capacity of all battery chemistries - proven in industry (laptops and electric vehicles), safe when handled properly and easily charged with the supplied charger. Batterypack has its own inbuilt under-voltage, over-voltage and short-circuit protection.
These 18650 cells are first choice when it comes to high power headlamps. They have many advantages over common AA-sized batteries including low internal resistance, significantly better performance under high loads, very low self discharging, no memory effect and no need for cycling before prior to use. They also have long life spans with no noticeable loss of capacity over hundreds of cycles.
New high-current connectors and tough cables
The M5 incorporates new connectors and cables connecting it to the battery pack. The DC5.5/2.1 connectors are injection molded in our workshop giving us full control over quality. They are fully compatible with all of our previous battery packs and headlamps.
The new grey, non-coiled cables are special! They are made from tough PUR materials, flexible to minus 30°C and very resistant to wear and weather. We have carefully designed the wiring to fit all head sizes from large men to small women. For special needs (such as fitting the light to your climbing or caving helmet) just record your needs in a comment when ordering.
The cable’s specification confirm its exceptional toughness:
- Guaranteed permanent application in multi-shift operation under extreme high bending stress
- Test of alternating bending cycles approx. 10 million
- High resistant to mechanical strain
- High property of alternating bending strength
- Long life durabilities through low friction-resistance by using the PP insulation
- High tensile strength-, abrasion- and impact resistant at low temperature
The connectors are specified for currents up to 7A and ensure firm and reliable contact over the long-term. Although they click together tightly (making accidental disconnection nearly impossible) they are easy to, even in difficult conditions when wearing gloves or in extreme cold.
Efficient electronics
The M5+’s electronics are made entirely in-house from carefully chosen discrete components, all driven by an 8-bit Atmel microcontroller. The high quality components include X7R ceramic capacitors, very low resistance mosfets, a large shielded coil and precision thermistors and resistors - all ‘high reliability’ components, including the durable tactile switch, sealed and rated to 500,000 cycles.
Making the circuit in-house means we are no longer tied to any specific controller hardware and we can easily upgrade firmware and add other features to optimize performance. As a result our electronics drive the LEDs at up to 98% efficiency giving longer runtimes.
The M5+ headlamp uses CONSTANT CURRENT REGULATION so intensity in all modes is maintained as the battery discharges. When the battery is no longer able to deliver the current required by a chosen mode, the circuit simply switches to a lower one. The light never shuts down suddenly and shines without flicker (no PWM).
Our electronics monitor REMAINING BATTERY CHARGE and give 3 levels of warning, alerting the user to levels of battery discharge down to 33%, 10% or completely empty with 1, 2 or 3 blinks of the beam.
The firmware has also been upgraded providing more precise regulation, smaller steps between intensity levels and faster mode changes.
First headlamp in the world with CREE XP-L2 leds
We use high power CREE XP-L2 LEDs with a 4000K color temperature providing a pleasant neutral white color with excellent color spectrum (CRI index min. 70). The XP-L2 LEDs have 25% higher light output than the previous XM-L2. Thanks to the lower color temperature the light is able to better penetrate fog and rain, improving judgment of distances, differentiation of colors and identification of obstacles and detail in the environment.
Maximum output of the Lucifer M5+ is 1650 lumens ANSI (heating and optical losses subtracted). LED efficiency is influenced by cooling - better cooling of the LEDs means more effective light output. The M5+’s LEDs and electronics are on a single, copper printed circuit board with a Direct Thermal Path that enables quick transfer of heat to the aluminum shell - the most effective LED cooling system available!
LEDs WITH HIGH COLOR FIDELITY - CRI>90
The M5+ is available with the standard LED or those with a high CRI (color rendering index). This renders the full range of colours much better than standard LEDs, producing a smoother and broader wavelength spectrum, similar to the sun – the light source to which human eyes are best adapted.
These special HICRI LEDs are well suited to people with vision defects or for colour-critical work environments, ensuring improved differentiation of colours and colour-coded items. They are rarely used for headlamps - we recommend them for orienteering as they provide vivid and true colours when reading maps. You can buy any Lucifer headlamp with HICRI LEDs without additional charge.
The high-CRI LEDs also work well for professional photography and video where high quality of light (CRI>90) is crucial and rich colouration and the best quality photographs are required. LEDs with low CRI do not render colours as well for photography – pictures end up de-saturated and cannot be corrected in post-production.
Perfect light distribution
Each of the M5+’s 2 LEDs has its own PMMA TIR lens which defines the width or focus of its beam. These lenses ensure the best optical properties for each of the three beam angles available - narrow 13°, medium 20° and wide 29°. Each of these angles can be combined as required.
Wide optics light more area just in front of the light and to the side but provide less ‘throw’ or distance lighting. Narrower optics provide greater distance illumination but less peripheral lighting. You can choose any combination but we recommend 13°+20° which is superb for most sporting activities - running or mountain biking with a maximum distance throw of 220 meters. The beam of light is very smooth without distracting artefacts.
For orienteering (and MTB orienteering) where use of a map is required we suggest the 13°+29° combination. The wider peripheral beam will light your map without need to redirect the headlamp.
For close-up work we suggest the wider combinations 13°+29° or 20°+29°.
Modes and user interface
The M5 headlamp offers 7 modes - VERY LOW, LOW, MED, HIGH, BOOST, BLINKING MODE and SOS. The four most frequently used modes (LOW, MED, HIGH and VERY HIGH) are easily accessible.
There is no ‘last mode’ memory - it’s unnecessary when all modes are available with a maximum of two clicks. The light turns on the same way every time and turns off with one long press.
There are 2 separate user interfaces – ‘easy’ and ‘advanced’. Switch between them with a long 10s button press.
EASY USER INTERFACE is easily understood. Modes can be changed with short clicks, cycling through LOW-MID-HIGH-BOOST-LOW etc
ADVANCED USER INTERFACE allows fast switching between modes. Modes can be changed with short, long and very long presses. A short click lowers the mode and cycles between low and mid mode. Long press switches to a higher mode.
The remaining 3 modes are the same for both interfaces. You access VERY LOW mode with two consecutive button clicks, BLINKING mode with three and SOS mode with four clicks.
All mode switching in advanced user interface is based on short/long button presses. You can try this out at our website using your computer’s mouse. Our default advanced interface is here: https://www.luciferlights.net/interactive, and our easy interface here: https://www.luciferlights.net/interactive_alt.
Runtimes
The runtimes specified for the 2-cell battery pack are minimums until the intensity drops below 70% of original value. When the battery cannot supply enough energy for a specific mode the headlamp switches to the next lower one. When it reaches the lowest mode it will no longer regulate brightness and light output gradually diminishes, giving plenty of warning before shutting off. When using the 4-cell battery runtimes are at least doubled.
Note that we specify runtimes more strictly than the ANSI NEMA FL-1 standard requires. ANSI accepts a drop in intensity down to 10% of the original which makes no sense - our runtimes reflect the practical illumination needs of real users!
